The first question most people ask: Why in the world should we dry firewood?
Well to a country boy this seems like nonsense, but we are not the government, but rather the people who saw a need was developing for firewood kilns to meet local, state, and federal rules for heat sterilizing firewood to prevent the spread of certain insects, such as the EAB (Emerald Ash Bore), Gypsy-moth, Wood wasp Sirex, and probably more to come.
Currently you find only a few firewood kiln manufacturers which all seem to use Refer van-bodies or insulated containers to make these kilns. This is a CHEAP solution, and we mean CHEAP with capital letters. Kiln-direct is the largest producer of Pallet heat treatment kilns in North America and we saw the same development in that industry. The first pallet kilns were also container based, but they did not last and eventually the more industrial kiln design won the day. The same seems to be coming true in the firewood industry.
