Building a kiln, step 3

Kiln theory and knowledge

Building a kiln, step 3

Third step in building a lumber kiln.

Constructing the building/roof structure and installing the kiln chamber.
Although each type of construction requires different knowledge, a few comments can be said about each type:
Wood panel design with inside aluminum vapor barrier.
This building system was developed to allow the use of local materials together with the benefit of pre-fabricated modular installation. This design allows you to install kilns in record time using pre-fabricated panels which were built using local labor and materials. This design is very easy to install using common hand and power tools.

Pre-fabricated aluminum/stainless steel panel design.
In most cases this building construction is based on the same principle as pre-fabricated metal warehouse buildings, where all the components are included as a package deal. Each system is a little different. However, most of these systems consist of a structure which is erected first. Afterwhich, an inside aluminum or stainless steel sheeting is installed on this structure.

Masonry construction.
This construction is one of the simplest to understand. However, the general problem is the roof construction and design. It is important that the brick laying quality is of high standard and the inside of the kiln chamber will have to be coated with a special kiln coating to prevent the moisture from getting to the masonry block. We can help you with knowledge and guidelines to ensure a quality project.

Pre-Cast Concrete chambers.
These types of kiln construction are normally done by local building companies, which specialize in making and installing these concrete walls and ceiling panels. The wall panels are usually insulated in the middle, where as the ceiling panels are normally uninsulated hollow-core pre-stressed concrete panels. As with the masonry construction, you will need to seal the inside of the kiln with some sort of kiln coating.

This step of the kiln installation process can either be done by a local construction company, a traveling installation crew, or on-site personnel depending on which one presents you with the most economical option overall. It should be understood that when using on-site personnel, you must make sure that they have the time available for the project if you are building it on a tight time schedule.
