Building a kiln, step 2

Second step in building a lumber kiln.

There are four common building constructions for the making of the structural chamber: Pre-fabricated alu/SS panels, masonry blocks, concrete panels, and a wood panel design with an inside aluminum vapor barrier. The latter method is normally the most ecomical without compromising quality and durability. Some of our customers actually believe this to be the best technical solution.

Irregardless of the type of building you will be using, there are certain common tasks which need to be performed:
  • Make sure the building design is engineered correctly according to local building codes and regulations. If our plans are used, you may have to make a few modifications to meet the local standards.
  • Purchase the actual building components either from a local vendor or through a kiln manufacturing company, such as us. However, rarely will a kiln manufacturing company be competetive on the basic building materials.
  • Pre-fabrication of the building components. On a masonry or concrete building, there is very little work before the actual erection of the building starts. On the pre-fabricated stainless steel building and the wood panel design with inside aluminum vapor barrier, a great deal of the work can be accomblished off-site in a manufacturing environment. Generally, the work accomblished in this stage saves more time later during the construction/erection phase of the kiln project.
This building preparation stage can either be part of the building proposal or it can remain as an individual part of the seven step plan.
